Sunday, Sept. 19. Fairfield, IA. Thug Estates.

During the drive today we stopped at an enormous fireworks place off the interstate. It was over-the-top.

We were feeling beat when we arrived at Thug Estates (our friend Dom’s house), but perked up after showers and a meal Dom and his friends cooked for everyone.

This was the first show Gary and I played together as a duo. It worked really well. He’s a great jazz drummer.

The second band was The Horror The Horror from Asheville, North Carolina. One of their members was in Br’er, who played at Clawfoot House. It was great to see him again. All of the bands on the Edible Onion label out of Philadelphia are swell. The Horror The Horror were very enjoyable, electric guitar and fiddle with percussion, keyboard and harmonium, strange lyrics and interesting vocals. Their last song had a bit of a Velvet Underground vibe going on, nice.

After that Bryan performed as Eloine. Tonight all the sounds changed from one type of sound to another with dramatic speed.

Fairfield is the home of the Maharishi University. I called my friend Daniel Seward from Bunnybrains in the morning to talk a few details about the show we’ll be playing together in Hudson, NY in a few days. When he found out I was in Fairfield he said, “Ah, the home of flying yoga.” I guess he had a friend from Fairfield whose parents who went to that school and were “levitating yogi masters.” It definitely seems like a fun town. The small town breakfast diner is called the Istanbul Grill. We’ve eaten at many similar diners on this loop around the Midwest, but this is the first one that had Turkish coffee.
