Monday, Sept. 20. Louisville, KY. Derby City Espresso.

Derby City Espresso in Louisville is an eccentrically cluttered, narrow coffee shop/bar with live parrots near the front door and a patio out the back, also a fish tank, a scooter and a risqué pinball machine. Cool place.

We had the pleasure of playing with R. Keenan Lawler. He plays drony, minimalist improvisations on bowed and plucked resonator guitar with some effects. His performance was wonderful.

Gary and I had a good set and got to watch Bryan play after that.

The tapewarp is about my favorite thing.

After the show we ended up driving for a few hours and got a cheap hotel room outside of Xenia, Ohio. I couldn’t get the hot water to work in the shower. The owner of the place was really rude about kicking us out of the room right at checkout time, and he and Gary had a spat. It was amusing.

We’re driving now, and there are finally some trees lining the road, a nice change after driving past bare fields for days. Tonight it’s a show at Helter Shelter in Pittsburgh, tomorrow New Haven, CT. Don’t know much about what kind of place it is in Pittsburgh, but we’ll find out soon. I’m about to experiment with cooking some Indian food from a packet in a rice cooker plugged into the cigarette lighter. We’ll see how it goes.
