Thursday, Sept. 2. Iowa City, IA. The Mill.

On Thursday morning we all had breakfast together at a diner in Ames. Ron told intensely entertaining stories and Dave wore his sunglasses. Gary, who sells rare vinyl for a living, went and found a record store called Vinyl Cafe, where we met up later and I bought a tape called Generic Cowboy Poetry by Baxter Black. That place was cool, good coffee and a little listening booth for checking out the records.

Gary and Chris took off for Iowa City to hit up some more record stores and Ron, Dave, Bryan and I spent the day in Des Moines. The architecture in Des Moines is really beautiful. I spent the afternoon in a sci-fi looking library with coppery windows. Ron and Dave took a long walk in the sculpture garden, Dave taking photos of the sculptures under the dark cloudy sky while Ron made sketches in his little spiral notebook. Bryan was hoping to meet up with Chuck Hoffman to do some recording, but we stayed in Ames too long…next time.

Lots of coffee and some juice and then off to Iowa City, where we played at the Mill with one of my favorite musicians, Ed Gray. It was good to see Sam Locke Ward again, too. We had some good pizza and I was wishing I could sing along to Ed’s dark songs. Catchy melodies—when he’s not improvising feedback with his souped-up classical guitar—with cheerful lyrics such as my favorite line from the night, “The dogs that you feed scraps to are used to eating shit, and the sadness on their faces is only in your head.”

Great time that night and the next morning with our gracious host Jay Schleidt. We went to the Hamburg Inn for breakfast and bummed around on Jay's porch.
