We met up with our new guitar, mandolin and waterphone player, Philip Gayle today! He lives in New York City. Philip’s great; he usually plays experimental improvised music, but after we got in touch he said he’d really like to play together sometime, and he ended up joining up with us for the east coast leg of the tour. He rode up to New Haven, where he went to eat at the place that invented the hamburger, which was across from the place that invented the pizza, or something like that.
Getting ready for the show
Café Nine was the first of three shows we’re playing with Kath Bloom. She brought her band down from Litchfield, CT, where she lives, for the show. Seeing her play was so great.
We all ended up jamming together on some songs. Gary played drums with them for a while and Philip played mandolin. I sang backup vocals on “Such a Tease.” Kath played recorder and sang on “Jephthah’s Daughter” and “Your Words” and played the blues harp on “Iowa.” Her fiddle player, Tom, played with us, too.
There was a thunderstorm going on outside, lots of bright lightning. The guys who ran the place were really kind.
